  8. HyperNotes was written by Thom Whalen.
  9.  It is a minimum implementation of a Hypertext system for the Amiga.  Even
  10. a minimum implementation has a number of uses.

  12. arrange to get the source code.  If anyone writes other data bases that are
  13. compatible with the HyperNotes reader, Thom Whalen would appreciate seeing

  27. HyperNotes is the smallest program that could act as a hypertext reader.
  28. The data bases are created with any external file editor (like ed or 
  29. MicroEMACS.)  The important features are that the program automatically
  30. creates the links between the paragraphs from the label at the beginning of
  31. each paragraph within each file.  
  32. Links are controlled by splitting the data base into different files.

  35. Clearly there are a number of upgrades that would make HyperNotes more useful.
  36. The window is not erased very well before a new paragraph is displayed.  (It
  37. uses Intuition borders instead of a lower level ClearRegion.)  The
  38. user should be able to click on any word in an underlined phrase, not just
  39. the first one.  It
  40. would be nice to have a scroll gadget in the right border when the window is
  41. too small to display the whole paragraph.  Another gadget
  42. in the bottom border to return to the beginning of the current file would be
  43. nice.  HyperNotes does not behave very well if the internal data allocations
  44. are exceeded (50,000 bytes of text divided into 1000 paragraphs).
  45. It would be good if the window could be put on any screen, rather than
  46. always being put on the workbench.  It would be useful to build an editor into
  47. the program so that it would not be just a reader.  Etc. Etc. Etc.

  50.  Hypertext is a good way to provide reference information, such as
  51.    a programming reference guide
  52.    the solution to an adventure game
  53.    or even to make a new game
  54.  because the reader can navigate to the precise information desired.
  55.  Hypertext is a poor way to provide tutorial information, such as
  56.    a description of hypertext systems
  57.    a mathmatics textbook
  58.  because the reader will miss important points as he navigates around
  59. the data base.

  62.  The advantage of presenting the solution to Shadowgate in a hypertext format
  63. is that you do not have to see any more of the solution than you need to get
  64. you started on the right track.
  65.  The disadvantage is that it takes some effort to get to the part where you are
  66. stuck.  However, just remember that this solution is layed out in the same way
  67. as the game itself.
